 Hi there!

Here you are a set of videos for you to watch and learn about Reported Speech.

I hope you find them appealing and that they help you master the use of such an important aspect of English grammar, which tends to be part of ABAU exams, as it has been happening for many years.

If you are so kind, leave some comments on how you find them.

Reminder for Present Perfect Simple and Continuous as well as Past Perfect

Hi there!

I just want to remind you that last year (November 2020) I uploaded some helpful videos on the use of both Present and Past Perfect Simple and Continuous. Since it would be useless to upload them again, you only need to search the Blog Archive (top right corner) and find November 2020. A menu with different underlined entries will unfold so that you can click on the ones you want to watch again.

Summarizing Tips

Six Effective Tips to Write a Summary

A summary presents the major ideas from a text while reducing its length.

When you write a summary, you may find it tempting to combine various parts of the text. However, this isn’t the best strategy. To write an effective summary, you can rearrange the order of the points and remove minor details.

1.  Identify the sections of the text

Find the text’s thesis and main ideas. Breaking down the text into sections helps you to understand the author’s flow and organization.

2.  Distinguish between major and minor details

How do the details connect back to the thesis and main ideas? Remember, a summary is a shortened version of the original text. You’ll need to focus on the need-to-know information.

3.  Remove minor details and examples

Condense the text, but beware of misrepresenting the author’s ideas. Sometimes omitting details can change the spirit of the text.

4.  Pay attention to transition words

Transition words can signal emphasis and guide you through the logic of the text’s argument. Look out for words like “however”, “therefore”, and “thus”.

5.  Re-order the ideas as needed

You don’t have to maintain the exact same order as the author. Re-organize your points so that your summary is logical.

6.  Reserve your opinions

Your analysis of the text is important, but it does not belong in a summary. Remember, a summary is a condensed form of the author’s ideas and intent. Save your opinions of the text for a discussion.

Welcome aboard to a new thrilling academic year

 Hello there,

I just want to use this first post of our "new age" to give you a warm welcome back to this blog.

My one and only aim by using this blog is to provide you with information of all sorts (videos, links, comments...) that I hope you will find useful for a better understanding of the different aspects that are part of learning and using English as a foreign language.

As you already know, I would be glad if you could leave some comments after you read, listen or watch the posts because by doing so you are encouraging me to go and find more useful stuff.

Coherence and Cohesion in Academic Writing

11 May 2021

After the great discussion which arose in the morning...

I felt compelled (in a very positive sense) to broaden the limits of the forum and bring it to the online world.

It all started during our analysis of the cartoons with which lesson 6 starts: the rats which desperately chase happiness. It is supposed to be around the corner but the poor little animals keep running and turning without ever coming closer to it.

There are 4 big signs that sort of represent 4 different stages for rats (people) in their hunt for happiness:

1. Work harder

2. Earn more money

3. Buy more things

4. Keep going

and then you would find yourself back to square one.

Well, this led us to a discussion on how necessary money is and/or if the need for money is just another necessity  which society/consumerism/capitalism has made us consider as such.

Whatever your opinion is, feel free to leave a comment below.

Best luck for your challenges and a new one

First of all, thanks for sharing your challenges here.

Second, I have a new one for you: why don't you follow my advice here and practise a little bit of listening every day? It will only take you 6 minutes a day. Do you remember when I told you about 6Minute English by BBC?

Well, I found out that they are on Spotify too. I guess you all know what Spotify is, right?

Just download the app on your smartphone and search for 6Minute English podcast. You will see that you also have the chance to listen to 6Minute Grammar, which has short explanations of the use of different grammar aspects that we have seen, we are seeing and we are going to see this year.

Also, I have retweeted today a link to British Council Listening. Here you will find audio fiction, which is a sort of audio novel that you can use for listening practise.

I hope you find it useful!

What would you do if you started a new challenge for 30 days?

 My dear students,

After you watch the video I have just uploaded, I would love to hear from you on this blog again. I am curious to know what your challenge would be if you decided to start one now and for the next month.

All you have to do is write a second conditional. In fact, you must use the condition of the example and just complete it by adding the result part.

For instance:

If I started a 30-day challenge, I would read 20 pages of a novel every day before I go to sleep.

This is not only an example but a real challenge for me. What is your challenge?

If you have 3 minutes for some listening, take a look at this video
